Tips

Gravity Return

  • Place the chlorinator as close to, and above, the pit or tank as possible to minimize the discharge piping run.

  • The chlorinator discharge pipe should be the same size as the chlorinator outlet fitting.

  • The discharge piping should NEVER run uphill. It should always run slightly downhill or level.

  • The solution should NOT discharge below the water level in the pit or tank. If the end of the pipe is below water level, surging may occur in the chlorinator.

  • On installations where the filter pit is below the pool, add a solenoid valve on the inlet. In the event of a power failure, the solenoid will close, preventing the draining of the pool through the chlorinator.

Suction Return

  • Do ONLY on applications were the pool recirculation pump is above the water level.
(Cannot be used with Model 3500.)

  • Raise the chlorinator above the pool re-circulation pump suction line by about six inches to allow gravity to assist.

  • Place the chlorinator as close to the pipeline as possible, minimizing the discharge piping run.

  • The chlorinator discharge pipe should be the same size as the chlorinator outlet fitting.

  • The discharge piping should NEVER run uphill. It should always run slightly downhill or level.

  • When returning the chlorinator to service, remember to close the vacuum relief valve.

Pressure Return

  • Know the pressure in the pipeline where the pump will be discharging and pick an appropriately sized pump.

  • Know how to balance the level in the solution tank:
    1. Turn system on.
    2. Open the pump discharge valve slightly to start water flow through system.
    3. Open inlet valve and set to desired flow rate.
    4. Slowly, and in small increments, continue to open the discharge valve and adjust inlet valve as necessary to get desired inlet flow.
    5. Make incremental changes to the discharge valve until the tank water level drops and stabilizes approximately ½ to ¾ tank level.

  • On installations below the pool level, add a solenoid valve on the inlet if one is not used for a chemical controller. In the event of a power failure, the solenoid will close, preventing the draining of the pool through the chlorinator.

PowerBase® and PowerBase® AT

  • Know the pressure in the pipeline where the pump will be discharging. If the pressure is higher than 20 psi, then a special pump will be needed.

  • Know how to balance the level in the solution tank. Refer to the manual.

Pool Water Chemistry
PPG recommendations:

pH range  7.2 - 7.4 For bather comfort and chlorine efficiency
Calcium hardness 200 ppm minimum To protect equipment form corrosion
Total alkalinity 80-100 ppm To assure water clarity
Cyanuric acid 30-50 ppm To reduce chlorine demand (in outdoor pools only)
