Diaphragm Pump Buyers Guide

A diaphragm pump (also known as a Membrane pump, Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pump (AODD) or Pneumatic Diaphragm Pump) is a positive displacement pump that uses a combination of the reciprocating action of a rubber, thermoplastic or teflon diaphragm and suitable valves either side of the diaphragm (check valve, butterfly valves, flap valves, or any other form of shut-off valves) to pump a fluid.

There are three main types of diaphragm pumps:

  • Those in which the diaphragm is sealed with one side in the fluid to be pumped, and the other in air or hydraulic fluid. The diaphragm is flexed, causing the volume of the pump chamber to increase and decrease. A pair of non-return check valves prevent reverse flow of the fluid.

  • Those employing volumetric positive displacement where the prime mover of the diaphragm is electro-mechanical, working through a crank or geared motor drive, or purely mechanical, such as with a lever or handle. This method flexes the diaphragm through simple mechanical action, and one side of the diaphragm is open to air.

  • Those employing one or more unsealed diaphragms with the fluid to be pumped on both sides. The diaphragm(s) again are flexed, causing the volume to change.

When the volume of a chamber of either type of pump is increased (the diaphragm moving up), the pressure decreases, and fluid is drawn into the chamber. When the chamber pressure later increases from decreased volume (the diaphragm moving down), the fluid previously drawn in is forced out.[3] Finally, the diaphragm moving up once again draws fluid into the chamber, completing the cycle. This action is similar to that of the cylinder in an internal combustion engine.

AODD pumps

Diaphragm Pumps

The air-operated double-diaphragm pumps (AODD pumps) are ideal where water or a particulate mixture needs to be moved in a hurry, and is driven by compressed air. Wilden pumps are versatile, and a single pump can deliver a wide range of flow rates and outlet pressure. Originally adopted by the construction and mining industries for pumping slurries, cement and mud, double-diaphragm pumps rapidly became popular in other sectors.

Diaphragm Pumps

Air operated diaphragm pumps are common industrial pumps that use positive displacement to move liquids. These devices typically include a single diaphragm and chamber, as well as suction and discharge check valves to prevent backflow. Air operated diaphragm pumps are highly reliable because they do not include internal parts that rub against each other. In fact, prolonged diaphragm life may be possible if the diaphragm pump is run dry to prime.

About Us

Our Publisher and Owner has been involved in the Canadian Process Control Market for over 35 years. As a former publisher and founder of one of our competitor's print publications in 1992 he left and began his own print magazine known as The Complete Process Products Book which evolved into Process Controls and Instrumentation News. In 1999 we created www.process-controls.com which contained an online Buyers Guide. We further evolved to the web site you see today and began to develop and maintain web sites for our clients. We introduced The Process News in February 2004 with a worldwide circulation of 43,000 readers providing up-to-date information on the latest products.

Process News

Process News bi-weekly newsletter is sent out every second Tuesday to over 45,000 readers worldwide. Process News was designed to make it easy to obtain product information, get quotes, contact manufacturers or their representatives. The pages that follow contain the latest information supplied to us from manufacturers and their representatives on new products or services offered to the process controls and instrumentation market. Twice per month the Process News newsletter will be sent to you from Process Controls and Instrumentation. Each newsletter will contain the latest up-to-date product information available.
