Buying Tips
  • Ask the manufacturer if the lifting device conforms to ASME B30.20 standards.
If it doesn't, DON'T BUY IT! This code is the basic U.S. safety standard for all reputable below the hook lifter manufacturers and the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires that all lifting devices comply with this code. Companies using lifting equipment that doesn't comply with this code are endangering their workers.

  • Choose the lifting device that is best suited for the application.
Manufacturers can aid you in determining what is available and the costs involved. Often times light duty equipment is substituted in a heavy duty application and vice versa. The purchase price and maintenance costs can be kept to a minimum if the right lifter is chosen.

  • Give as much information about the application to the manufacturer as you can.
Even insignificant items can affect the design and cost of the lifting device. Most manufacturers have a standard questionaire that you can fill out that asks pertinent questions about your application.

  • Never purchase a lifter based solely on price.
Search out companies that have proven track records with other customers. Often a trip to the manufacturer's plant can eliminate any doubts about their performance and product quality. Ask questions and see for yourself!

  • Plan to keep spare parts (critical to the operation of the lifter) in your inventory.
Since most lifting devices are custom made, parts are not always stocked by the manufacturer and may require more delivery time. Planning ahead may minimize down time of the lifting device.

  • Plan to educate your plant personnel about the operation / maintenance of the lifting device.
Good operating / maintenance manuals provide an excellent way for personnel to review the use and care of the lifting device. Make sure the manufacturer provides them. A safety training course should also be scheduled when dealing with a new type of lifting device. Knowing how to properly use the lifting device increases productivity and helps to prevent accidents.
