Almost everyone in the industry is familiar with the Smart Probe series from Kaye Instruments. These intelligent RTD temperature probes combine the sensor and readout in one totally integrated package that cuts system error in half and transmits temperature data directly to your computer without going through an intermediate readout device.

These Smart Probes are very popular, and with good reason. They make automated collection of temperature data so easy you won’t believe it. They reduce calibration costs because you only have to calibrate the Smart Probe instead of a probe and a separate readout device. They operate from –183°C to 600°C with up to 0.01°C accuracy. You can link up to 99 Smart Probes together without having to buy any additional readout boxes or software.

The Smart Probe is truly unique and one of the most innovative products in the industry. We’ve been using them for many years in combination with other Hart instruments to create turn-key calibration solutions. We’ve never been disappointed with their performance or quality, and you won’t be either.

System Error Cut in Half

Traditional precision temperature measurement is performed with a high-quality probe, like an SPRT, connected to some type of readout device, such as a DVM or other instrument capable of reading the analog signal produced by the probe. Both the probe and the readout instrument must be calibrated periodically to compensate for their normal electronic error.

Unfortunately, even after separate rigorous calibration of both instruments, each one will still contain a degree of error. Connecting the probe and readout instrument together produces a single system having a total system error equal to the sum of the errors found in each instrument.

Additional readout error is often introduced into temperature measurements during the process of converting the probe’s analog signals into degrees of temperature. Manual computations, look-up tables and other conversion methods can add to the system error already present.

The 5690 Smart Probes have onboard digital electronics. Because the electronics are integrated into the probe, the probe and readout device are calibrated as a single instrument. Analog to digital conversion is direct, requiring no manual interpolation or other off-instrument calculations.

Because the Smart Probe acts as only one instrument, sources of system error are cut in half.

How many other new temperature calibration instruments have you seen that actually improve the precision and accuracy of your temperature measurements and simultaneously reduce your equipment costs?

Reduced Operating Costs

The 5690 probes lower your operating costs in three distinctive ways.

Since each 5690 probe has its own fully integrated digital circuitry, no readout instrument is required, thus reducing your thermometry equipment costs. You can use as many 5690s as the job requires (up to 99) without having to buy additional hardware, which often costs many times more than the probes.

With only one instrument to calibrate, your annual calibration maintenance costs are lower and, as a bonus, overall system error is reduced.

Multiple 5690 probes can be linked in parallel and then connected to the RS-232 port on your computer for automated calibration or temperature measurements. All software is built-in, so any temperature monitoring job is automatable without additional software expense.

Each 5690 is usable up to 1000 feet from your PC and doesn’t require an internally installed A/D board. These “smart” probes are controllable from any desktop, laptop or handheld computer that has an RS-232 port.

Fully Portable

Each 5690 probe is totally self-contained. Its software is stored in nonvolatile EEPROM memory. Calibration coefficients, filtering constants and the probe address all go with you when you need to take one of your 5690s out of the lab.

The probe is compatible with CRTs, VDUs or PCs that have an RS-232 port. Leave your desktop computer on your desk and use a field unit or bring along your favorite laptop.

Measure against any temperature scale; IPTS-48, IPTS-68 and ITS-90 are all contained in the 5690’s memory. Changing scales takes only a couple of software commands and less than a minute.

Why carry multiple instruments on long trips when one will do the job better than two?

PC Software

Each smart probe is shipped complete with software for IBM PC-compatible computers. Simply load the software and use the simple menu to select the function you need. Set all configuration parameters (such as ITS-90, display measurement data, plot probe resistance or temperature and display data files) and use the calibration program to recalibrate the smart probe when it’s time.

This easy-to-use software gives you data plots and precision measurements within minutes of unpacking your smart probe. The user’s manual includes instructions and command sets for easy communication with the smart probe using other computers or terminals.
