| An
MFOV lidar records laser pulses backscattered from clouds
at several receiver fields of view simultaneously.
This lidar is based
on technology and algorithms developed and perfected
by Canada's Defence Research Establishment Valcartier
(DREV). Optech delivered the first MFOV lidar
system to DREV in 1989.
By probing clouds with
an MFOV lidar and then applying DREV's algorithm,
you can determine remotely the phase and liquid water
content of clouds - large droplets, small droplets,
ice and fog - and thus forecast more accurately the
hazards they may pose to aviation, shipping and other
interests.
By determining the
backscattering, forward-scattering and extinction
coefficient of clouds, an MFOV lidar provides accurate,
real-time cloud forecasting without the errors that
may be introduced by using atmospheric models.

Applications
- Determine the contents
of clouds dynamically and accurately
- Characterize aircraft
in-flight icing conditions
- Military, naval
and aviation applications
