The Virtual Lab Technician is a powerful new software application for Windows from Isotech.

Applications for automating temperature calibration are available from various sources. Many use standard industrial data acquisition cards to gather data from sensors under test. This approach can be useful but for many applications the limiting factor is the performance or accuracy of the data acquisition cards. Multi channel input cards usually incorporate simple cold junction compensation systems to allow such cards to be used with thermocouples, a typical 16 bit card might have an impressive specification for measuring DC voltage but be let down by CJC performance. Typically CJC figures are +/- 1.0°C or larger. Another limitation relates to use with standard platinum resistance thermometers, s.p.r.t.'s. A good measurement system for an s.p.r.t. will provide both an appropriate measuring current and a means of eliminating thermo-electric errors. It is unusual to see both of these measuring techniques built into standard data acquisition systems.

The performance of the laboratory should be determined by the laboratories choice of equipment - not the automatic calibration system !

To overcome these limitations the approach of VLT is to consider the requirements from the calibration engineers view point, we have analysed the tasks required of the calibration engineer and designed VLT to complete these tasks. VLT will take control of the calibration bath and set it to appropriate temperatures, it will measure both the sensors under test and the value from a reference probe. It uses Isotech calibration baths and either the TTI 1 or TTI 2 Isotech Temperature Indicators. A new purpose designed switch box allows up to 16 sensors to be measured at once.

Isotech is aware of the needs of the calibration laboratory. Our UKAS accredited laboratory was established in 1986. We have designed the system to meet the requirements of calibration laboratories in terms of quality and traceability.

Recognizing not all users will have the benefit of using Isotech equipment exclusively we have designed the system in a modular manner and can arrange for customizing VLT to a users individual requirements.
