Advantage of Acme "ACRS" vs. backwash units

Scraping can be superior to backwashing.

In many demanding applications, solids can become wedged into
screen openings, resist the backwash action and remain in place.
The pressure loss across the screen gradually increases, restricting
the effectiveness of the unit. The Acme scraper strainer unit makes
contact with the screen with a series of blades and brushes, effectively
lifting the materials off the screen and providing for complete cleaning. Experience has shown that these Acme blades last for two to five years before requiring replacement. The Acme shaft and screen are made of stainless steel to resist corrosion and damage during operation.

Acme units are custom fabricated.

Once the project starts, installation or site limitations may dictate that
the inlet and discharge location or orientation, or the overall size of the unit requires modification to facilitate installation in a more efficient or economical way. With conventional cast bodies, this is not normally an option. With Acme fabricated units, engineers are invited to discuss
design optimization anytime before manufacture.

Save water by cleaning the screen without resorting to a blowdown.

With conventional backwash units, the backwash mechanism must
be open to atmospheric pressure in order to clean the screen, expelling
water from the unit with every cleaning cycle. The Acme design scrapes
the screen clean with residue accumulating in the bottom of the unit, only resorting to a blowdown after multiple scraping cycles, minimizing the amount of water expelled when cleaning the unit. Experience has shown
that less than one percent of flow can be required for blowdown cycles.

Clean the screen more often per rotation.

The Acme unit uses four cleaning mechanisms to clean the screen –
two stainless steel blades and two brushes. Based on an 8 RPM reduction, the screen is effectively cleaned 32 times per minute.

High open screen area relative to pipe size.

The Acme unit offers a minimum of 4:1 ratio of screen open area
to pipe size, allowing for a greater straining surface, less pressure drop
and fewer cleaning cycles than most backwash units.

Summary:

The Acme scraper strainer units feature more flexible solutions to
tough filtration applications, offering superior cleaning performance,
longer filter media life, reduced water usage for blowdown cycles and
with uninterrupted flow. Maintenance is significantly reduced and operational reliability is enhanced.
