A die positioner brings a slot die into proper position relative to the substrate to be coated, which is typically supported by a backing roll. The backing roll itself remains fixed, and is typically included with the positioner to ensure greater precision and ease of integration. Liberty positioners provide accurate and repeatable positioning, which is an important element for successful fixed lip slot die coating applications.

Standard Positioner

The primary movement of the positioner is along a line running through the slot in the die toward the center of the roll. In a standard Liberty positioner this is a horizontal movement that provides:

  • “On Coat” and “Retracted” positions, a dampened larger motion used to initiate or end the coating process
  • “Splice jump” position, a smaller retraction used to allow web splices to pass through the coating gap
  • Precision coating gap adjustment using differential screws to set distance from die lips to substrate

Other standard features include:

  • Thick stainless steel construction for rigidity and precise repeatability
  • Pneumatically powered movement along linear slide rails for compatibility with solvent based coatings
  • High accuracy digital indicators on each end of positioner to measure gap from die lips to backing roll, so die location can be measured and repeated

Compact Positioner

For die sizes of 15” (380mm) or less, CCR offers a compact positioner with the same features as our standard version. Arrangement of some items differs, and some options may not be available for the compact version.

Options

  • Angle adjustment permits die rotation about die slot
  • Height adjustment allows die to be raised or lowered relative to center of backing roll
  • Positioner mounted on moveable cart constructed of anodized steel for easier set-up and tear-down
  • Positioner situated on base for floor mounting
  • Die handler on linear carriage above die to facilitate removal and splitting of die
  • Shaft extension on backing roll for customer-supplied drive
  • Die heater to keep coating warm during application
  • Metric hardware to match local standards
  • Manual gauge on coating gap for compatibility with solvent based coatings
