Patch Coaters are custom-designed to work in your interrupted coating process. Diverse products coated by Liberty dies in this manner include ceramic capacitors, medical implant layers, and photo-optical devices.

Typically, patch coaters are used for laboratory development work, small production runs, and other situations in which it is more practical to work with a sheet of substrate than a web.

Size permitting, all equipment is cart-mounted. Standard Liberty fixed lip dies are used, typically mounted in a vertical orientation so that a sheet of substrate, held in place by a vacuum table or clamps, may be curtain coated.

Die Movement
The slot die is mounted on a holder, which is moved at a steady velocity along the length of the stationary sheet or other desired path. This is in contrast to web coating, wherein the web moves past a stationary die.

Movement of the holder along single-axis rails is the standard Liberty configuration. You may specify an acceptable velocity variation to ensure a smoothness of motion. Options include:

  • Multiple patches along the length of a single sheet.
  • Two-axis positioning system.
  • Robot programmed for a desired motion.

Fluid Delivery System

CCR typically supplies a pumping system as part of the overall patch coating design. Consideration is given to the need for quick starts and stops in fluid flow to match die movement.

Controls

The control system coordinates sheet mounting, die movement, and fluid delivery. Control options include:

  • Touch screen operator interface.
  • Manual or automatic cycle operation.
  • Clamp or vacuum table actuation and detection.
  • Die movement, including coating gap control.
  • Pump controller interface.
