A
Non-Toxic Alternative to Glycols for
a Variety of Industrial Applications
Enviro-Kool,
a new high performance fluid from Clearwater, Inc., is designed
for secondary cooling systems, process cooling, and other
heat transfer applications at operating temperatures of
-70°F to 300°F. The high thermal conductivity enhances heat
transfer efficiency compared to glycol/water systems, effectively
increasing the system capacity. Enviro-Kool's low viscosity
at low temperatures reduces pumping requirements, which
reduces energy costs and can allow the use of smaller pumps
in newly installed systems or retrofitted applications.
Enviro-Kool
is a non-toxic and non-flammable ready to use fluid that
can be used as a direct replacement for glycols without
any modification to equipment. A specially designed inhibitor
package assures the protection and long life of metal components,
and the fluid complies with the ASTM D-1384 standard. Enviro-Kool
is compatible with all commonly used elastomers in its operating
temperature range.
Enviro-Kool can also be used for winterization of HVAC equipment.
Its biostatic nature prevents bacterial growth and the associated
odors, and the use of Enviro-Kool should simplify recommissioning
procedures by not requiring a separate disinfection step.

Health,
Safety and the Environment
Toxicity toward
humans and other species is important in protecting the
environment in case of an unanticipated release of any line
heater fluid. Enviro-Kool has a low toxicity toward mammals
and fish, and is not nearly as dangerous as ethylene glycol
to humans. In addition, if Enviro-Kool is released to the
environment, it biodegrades rapidly, with much less oxygen
demand than the glycols, as shown in the following table.
Low oxygen demand means little chance of fish kill in rivers
and streams through oxygen deprivation.
