Linear
and Rotary Position Transducers
Position
Transducers
This section
presents a sample of our linear and rotary-position transducers.
Our products utilize two technologies, MystR® conductive
plastic and wire-wound. Conductive plastic potentiometric sensors
are long-life units designed for rugged industrial applications.
Our wire-wound products continue to serve in applications where current
is being drawn through the wiper is necessary.
The following guide
should allow you to quickly compare the major characteristics of each
transducer. For more detailed information on any transducer refer
to the product
section.
Don't forget to see our section on how
to select
a position transducer if you are not sure what transducer will work
best in your application. It's a step-by-step analysis of the factors
you need to consider before buying a transducer.
What
You Should Know About Our Position Transducers
The Honeywell Sensing
and Control Transducer products group manufactures a variety of potentiometric
position sensors in its Massachusetts plant. The sensors use a
tried and true potentiometric technology originally developed for military
applications and more recently applied to industrial markets.
The proprietary MystR® conductive plastic has extensive temperature
and power capabilities along with infinite resolution in very small
stroke units (5 mm [0.2 in]) without any intermediate signal conditioning.
In a world where miniaturization drives sensor development, potentiometers
have shrunk to the point where their weight is measured in grams and
their stroke in millimeters. This amazing technology can still
be utilized for measurements in tens of feet with repeatability in thousandths
of an inch.
The old belief that
potentiometers are reliable but short-lived is giving way to the understanding
that new potentiometer technology combined with creative mechanical
designs has substantially reduced the element and wiper from the unit's
life calculation. It is now the bearings and other components,
which must be studied to determine the unit's life. We now talk
of billions of operations where a few years ago we talked in millions.
In many cases the life of the potentiometer is longer than the life
of the unit it is monitoring.
Wire Wound products
are also available to serve your needs when current is being drawn through
the wiper. These products may be a variable resistor or semi-precision
Potentiometer. The Honeywell Position Transducer Products Group
now manufacture the Wire Wound products formerly manufactured under
the "Waters" name. Our JP/2, PT 3/4 and WPM 7/8 product
lines, qualified to various MIL Specs, continue to serve in limited
life and high reliability applications. We manufacture many thousands
of JP/2's, for use in dimmer controls for aircraft panel lighting, annually
in our Acton location. Contact our Application
Support group with your application.
In addition to our
standard products, we offer strong engineering design support for your
OEM application. We can incorporate a finished position sensor
or custom designed product into your equipment, many times within just
a few hundredths of an inch, eliminating the need for external devices
and coupling mechanisms. If you are about to begin the design
of a new product that will require position sensing, give our Application
Support people a call. Let us work together to develop unique
capabilities into your product that will allow you to step ahead of
the competition.
"WATERS TORQUE
WATCH® GUAGE", an industry mainstay when an accurate
indication of rotary force is necessary, is also currently manufactured
by the Honeywell Position Transducer Products Group. Available
in three models we cover the ranges from 0.015 to 2000 inch-ounces.
These rugged standards are also repaired and re-certified in
our Acton location. Our Customer Service
people will assist you in selecting a model for your application.
