How to size coalescers?
The best way to determine the sizing of a coalescer is to first get a measurement of the vessel containment.
Example: 42” long x 40” wide
This vessel with the floating intake will exhibit a continuous contact of 7.6 US gallons (28.8 L).
As follows:
42” x 40” = 1,680 cubic inches
1,680 divided by 1728 cubic inches in a foot = .97 cubic foot x 7.8 US gallons in the first 1” (the area that contacted by the floating intake).
Therefore the coalescer will have access to the top 1” of the solution and make a continuous contact to the area of free oil and exchange the top solution (7.57 divided into 60 minutes) about 8 times an hour. The recommended turnover is approximately 3 times an hour.
This formula will assist you in determining why a floating intake is valuable when in a competition situation.
