BioStreme Bilogical Waste Treatment

The use of biological processes for the treatment and/or remediation of wastes are established methods for reducing the impact of both industrial and municipal pollutants on the environment. In any biological process, from septic systems to large-scale treatment plants the fundamental component is bacteria. As such, effective management of the existing biological population is essential to the proper operation of these systems.

The BioStreme™ “Micronutrient Formulation”, developed to enhance growth and reproduction of facultative and aerobic bacteria through its engineered formulation of optimized essential nutrients thus eliminating the potential rate-limiting variables and associated undesirable by-products and odours generated by anaerobic bacteria. The proprietary formula consists of micronutrients amino acids and complex hybrid organic extracts considered as the building blocks for growth and
synthesis of new cell material.

With the use of BioStreme™ effective management of virtually any biological treatment process can be achieved and/or enhanced to provide increased treatment efficiency and operational cost savings. The BioStreme™ can be used for
spraying and incorporation applications.

Properties of BioStreme In Different Applications

BioStreme™ in a Wastewater Treatment Facility

BioStreme™ is composed of proprietary food nutrient ingredients, amino acids, micronutrients, and genetically developed plant extracts. The formulation is highly beneficial to a broad variety of microorganisms in wastewater treatment plants, such as protozoa, facultative aerobes and strict anaerobes. Supplementing wastewater treatment facilities with BioStreme can provide significantly improved plant performance, such as elimination of H2S, ammonia and volatile fatty acid odours. Other key benefits are:

  • Increased diversity of facultative aerobes.
  • Increased carbon oxidation.
  • Improved dissolved oxygen utilization.
  • Enhanced nitrification and denitrification.
  • Enhanced coagulation and flocculation.
  • Enhanced settleability.
  • Reduction in sludge volume index.

Biofilters

BioStreme™ may also be used on biofilters to make exchange reactions more complete, increase activity within the filter media, length the effective life of the media, and deodorize the spent gases.

The volume of the filter must be calculated and treatment incorporated just as it would be in a static pile. Since the biofilter processes gases from many piles or windrows, additional treatment of the biofilter will be needed form time to time. This will vary based on the load passing thought the biofilter and the biofilter’s size. Some may need treatment monthly and others less frequently. The correct frequency of application must be discovered initially be trial and error. As a general rule, undersized biofilters will need more frequent treatment.

Wastewater Facilities Which Can Benefit From The Use of BioStreme™

Aerated Lagoons/ Basin

Regardless of any unique, specific problems associated with any one lagoon, all lagoons have basically the same general problem - keeping up with the biological and/or chemical demand of the available oxygen. Solids may build up due to lack of bacterial consumption, resulting in the loss of most of the available liquid volume of the lagoon.

Adding BioStreme™ to aerated basins or aerated lagoons can increase carbon oxidation, particularly if aeration is turned off on regular intervals. Facultative anaerobes can quickly reproduce and respond to increased nutrient loads preventing or reducing any toxic shock situations.

BioStreme rejuvenates the system by promoting in the growth and gradual strengthening of facultative bacteria in lagoons. As this increased population
devours the overload, the lagoon functional operation improves until treatment can be reduced and maintained minimally as a preventative measure.

Anaerobic Systems

Application of BioStreme in Anaerobic systems can increase organic loading capacity, solids digestion capability, and solids settleability. It lowers total solids requiring disposal, and reduce Hydrogen Sulfide concentration. This results in less corrosion and odour, and higher gas production. Some examples of anaerobic systems are anaerobic lagoons and septic systems.

Aerobic Systems

Trickling filters/bio-towers, rotating biological contactors (RBC’s), aerated basins and lagoons, aerobic digesters and other aerobic processes all rely on bacteria to absorb organic compounds. Bacteria must first make contact with organic compounds contained in the water and then secrete enzymes capable of breaking down the
compunds. Once the compound is hydrolyzed it can be absorbed and pass through the membrane of the bacteria. Larger wastewater microbes such as protozoa feed on bacteria and with the aid of floc forming polymers produced by the biomass, are capable of settling and clarifying water, thus removing BOD5 and suspended solids form the final effluent.

Aerobic digesters can benefit by the addition of BioStreme by turning off aeration on regular intervals. This will allow fermentation bacteria to develop and produce enzymes capable of dissolving the membranes of dead activated sludge organisms. This will significantly reduce VSS and increase TSS concentration, thus increasing the effective working capacity of the digester by more than double. Additional benefits are elimination of odours, reduction in power usage and in total sludge processing costs.

Facultative Systems

Proper dosing of BioStreme™ can result in gradual strengthening of the facultative population until sufficient numbers exist to exceed the daily requirements of the lagoon. Variations in treatment are utilized depending on the types of off-gases venting from the lagoon (odours), the speed of correction required and the nature of the incoming material.

Application of BioStreme in facultative lagoons increases BOD removal efficiency, organic loading capability, nitrogen removal, dissolved oxygen, and solids destruction resulting in lower disposal and maintenance costs. It also lowers suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus in effluent and results in significant odour reduction and energy cost savings.

Some examples of Facultative systems are Anoxic Denitrification Systems, Cesspools, Drain Fields, Facultative Lagoons, Holding Tanks, Rotating Biological Contactors (RBC’s), Sequence Batch Reactors (SBR’s) and Trickling Filters.

BioStreme™ in Solid Waste

BioStreme™ Solid Waste Treatment is a formulated blend of amino acids, purines, pyrimidines, vitamins, mineral compounds surfactants, and plant oils. In contact with decomposing organic materials, BioStreme™ Solid Waste Treatment promotes exchange and oxidative reactions resulting in oxygen, oxygenated compounds, and stabilized compounds. Most odour problems are characterized by insufficient oxygen and unstable compounds, which generate noticeable, unpleasant smells. BioStreme™ Solid Waste Treatment works by inhibiting the growth of common anaerobic bacteria while enabling the proliferation of facultative anaerobic bacteria.

BioStreme Solid Waste Treatment is a contact agent, therefore, the product must be applied directly to odour causing areas to work. The only difference in application procedure will be the amount of water utilized for distributing the product and the concentration or product over a given area, usually m2.

In composting operations BioStreme™ Solid Waste Treatment should be sprayed directly on the surface of static piles and windrows, and should be reapplied as windrows are turned. The addition of BioStreme™ Solid Waste Treatment will not impact the composting process negatively, and may assist by promoting the proliferation of facultative bacteria.

BioStreme™ in Composting

Due to the fact that BioStreme™ changes the composting process bio-chemically, it is absolutely essential that the composting mass be given time to allow its micro-biological population to change after application of BioStreme™ and prior to disruption of the pile.

Optimum time needed is 28 to 30 days. A minimum of 21 days should be assumed. Consequently, BioStreme™ is ideal for static pile and aerated static pile facilities. In these operations it is normal to mix a pile and leave it undisturbed for 21 days, 28 days or even up to 60 days. Conditions of minimal to zero odour have been noted.

BioSreme can reduce sulfide production, labour, equipment wear, fuel consumption, and maintenance - if the site will agree not to turn for 14 to 15 days. If 28 days were allowed to pass prior to turning, the BioStreme™ would perform just as well as it does in static piles.
