The MTL611B intrinsically safe pocket data terminal is based on the technology used in the PsionŽ Organiser IITM, Model LZ64, and is for use in hazardous areas as a general-purpose hand-held data terminal (or 'electronic notebook').

A wide range of accessories, for hazardous area use from MTL and safe-area use from Psion, can be plugged into the top port of an MTL611B. These transform the data terminal into an essential tool for all engineers working in hazardous areas. MTL accessories for hazardous areas include the CNF41 configurator for MTL3073/4073/5073/5074 isolators, the CNF61 HARTŽ transmitter configurator and the SCM62 local IS communications module. Psion accessories, for safe-area use only, include a Comms-link module for exchanging data and files with IBM PC compatible computers and networks.

The alphanumeric LCD screen can display four lines of 20 characters each with variable contrast control for maximum legibility. Programs are selected and initiated from on-screen menus.

Internal memory includes 64K RAM and 64K ROM, the latter of which can be augmented by one or two IS DatapaksTM or FlashpaksTM. The IS Datapaks are available with EPROM capacity of 32K and are ideal for storing programs and permanent data while the faster IS Flashpaks provide 256K of flash memory and are suitable for storing temporary or permanment data.

Standard programs provided with the unit include a 'notepad', a diary with alarm facilities, a calculator with scientific functions and full date, time and stopwatch facilities.

The OPL programming language, derived from BASIC, is also included for software customisation. OPL provides a full range of standard capabilities,utilised by a comprehensive range of standard software or users' own customised software.

The 611B can use other data systems software to communicate with any HART compatible device. This can be used to set up, calibrate, range or monitor process variables and check data. More details are available from BMS Technology, who also have free manuals to download.

	The HART protocol superimposes digital signals at a low level on top of the 4-20mA analog signal. This permits two way communication, making it possible for additional information, beyond just the normal process variable, to be communicated to and from a smart field instrument. The digital signals can be used:
	to transmit up to 4 variables from each HART device for instrument diagnostics for instrument configuration changes
	Today, HART is the most widely used digital communications protocol for instruments in the process control industry. More than 105 manufacturers support HART with a choice of more than 170 different field instuments.
